Can Tungsten Carbide Rings be Resized?
As tungsten is used in many things, these are also used as tungsten carbide rings, and people are asking theirselfs: can tungsten rings be resized? Well, first of all you need to know:
What Is Tungsten?
A chemical element Tungsten, or wolfram with the symbol W and the atomic number 74. Tungsten is one of the rare metals found naturally on the Earth altogether with other compounds element. It was discovered as a new element in 1781 and first isolated as a metal in 1783. It has important ores include tungsten, wolframite, and scheelite.
Tungsten has been used commonly as an alloy in many heavy metals, such as high-speed steel, to manufacture cutting tools. It has also been used in wear-resisting coatings, also called superalloys.
So, can Tungsten Rings be Resized?
Tungsten carbide rings can’t be resized because of this two reasons:
Tungsten carbide rings are too brittle, and their atomic bonding, which forms during impurity, doesn’t bond with additional material. The process of resizing rings involves cutting them and adding/removing metal of that same alloy. Resizing a tungsten carbide ring isn’t possible because the ring isn’t flexible, so cutting is risky because cutting the glass could be broken in an unwanted direction.
Secondly, the rings are formed by an impurity process where they put tungsten and carbon powder in a mold and heat them supremely hot in a vacuum furnace, and it forms as one solid-state. If you cut the ring or reheating, it wouldn’t cause the ring to become more flexible or form sufficient bonds at the area cut before/after removing material. The ring’s temperature to allow be flexible enough to be forged would be so high that the ring would melt and lose its whole shape.
A tungsten carbide ring can be removed from your finger using a tool vice-grip pliers in an urgent case. These pliers apply enough pressure to fracture the ring safely from your finger.
